Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has revealed he wants to learn from Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister at Ibrox – calling the new Ibrox management duo “two legends of the game.”

Docherty admitted that he hopes to improve under the former Liverpool midfielders – who both captained their country – and thinks it is a “great” chance for him.

The 21-year-old revealed he wants to be like Gerrard was as a player and score regularly from midfield and hopes to get a chance to be part of his plans at Ibrox.

“I can learn off him and Gary McAllister as well – two legends of the game. If I listen to them and take on board what they say, then hopefully I can improve,” Docherty said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“You’re not captain of Liverpool unless you’re a top player. He was, and if I can benefit from playing under him, it’s great for me.

“He was a goalscoring midfielder, that’s what I want to be – an all-rounder as well. Hopefully I can learn off him and be part of his plans.”

Football Insider verdict:

There are far worse players to model your game on than Steven Gerrard – and few will get the chance to work so closely with the Liverpool and England legend. McAllister was no slouch as a player either and enjoyed a fantastic career at Leeds, Liverpool and others as he lifted a host of trophies and led Scotland to their last appearance at a major tournament. Working beside them on a daily basis will be a great help to not just Docherty either, but all the midfielders at the club as they try to cement a place in the squad. Both Gerrard and McAllister also played to a high level well into their late thirties which is something the likes of Graham Dorrans and Scott Arfield may look to tap into. Getting the mentality right is probably even more important and both Gerrard and McAllister were nothing if not winners during their career. You just need to look at Liverpool’s European Cup win in Istanbul to see how Gerrard can pull his side to a win by the scruff of their neck – same with McAllister and the UEFA Cup win over Alaves.
