Chelsea are close to completing a deal for Ross Barkley in a move that will end Tottenham’s interest after the north Londoners were unable to meet the player’s wage demands, according to reports.
BBC Football states that the midfielder will cost the Blues £15million and is expected to have a medical on Friday with the West London club ahead of a move.
The Sun state that Spurs were put off the Toffees man after they could not match the 24-year-old’s terms.
Mauricio Mochettino’s side have been crying out for a fresh pair of legs in midfield and Barkley would have been an ideal fit for the north Londoners.
However, Barkley has failed to make a single appearance this season due to a hamstring injury and will have a lot of work to do before he can make any kind of headway into the Blues’ first team.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte effectively confirmed the move in his press conference, saying, “For sure we’re talking about a young player, an English player.
“He can have good prospects for Chelsea. I think the club decided on this investment also for his contract
“He’s very young. He has a lot of space for improvement. He’s very strong physically, good technique.
“He’s a good prospect but at the same time, it will be very important to understand when he can recover from his injury. He had a bad injury and has not played for seven months.”
Football Insider verdict:
Tottenham will be disappointed to have missed out on Barkley as the winger, who was today described as a modern-day Paul Gascoigne live on TalkSport by presenter Perry Groves, is a flair player and typifies the Spurs way. There is always the possibility that due to the 24-year-old’s injury problems he could fail his medical but after almost joining Chelsea in the summer it looks nailed on that the Liverpudlian will get his move.
