West Ham United are plotting a sensational move to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes this summer, according to a report.
The Mirror reports on the live transfer blog on their website (Sunday, 11.17am) that the East London club’s representatives are set to discuss a potential move for the 24-year-old with his agent this week.
The Hammers appear determined to add another midfielder to the ranks this summer as the same newspaper recently reported that they have re-opened discussions to sign Sporting Lisbon enforcer William Carvalho.
Since completing a permanent move to the Catalan club last summer, the Portugal international has failed to successfully adapt to life at the Camp Nou.
Gomes only managed to contribute with three goals and three assists in all competitions last season but he was mainly deployed as a late substitute throughout the campaign.
The midfielder has already featured for Barcelona this season but he failed to impress in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup where bitter rivals Real Madrid comfortably won 2-0.
However, the midfielder played an important role in last year’s European Championships, featuring in five out of the seven matches, helping Portugal to win the tournament.
Gomes currently has four years remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou.
Football Insider verdict
Although Gomes has failed to live up to expectations in Barcelona, he should still not be written off as a player given the fact that he performed so well for Valencia in previous years. Having just signed for the La Liga giants last season, the best solution for the Hammers would be to try and negotiate a loan move as they would be forced to splash in order to land him on a permanent deal. After losing their opening Premier League matches, the morale of the West Ham supporters would certainly be boosted with some positive transfer activity and Gomes has the potential to shine in England and help the Hammers recover from their disappointing start.
In other West Ham transfer news, this Hammers attacker is favouring a move to Premier League rivals.
