West Ham table offer for 25-year-old eyed in January, Newcastle also make bid - reports

By Will Butcher

West Ham and Newcastle have tabled offers for St. Etienne right-back Kevin Malcuit, according to a report.

France Football claim the 25-year-old is the subject of two offers from both Premier League clubs, after Newcastle gained promotion from the Championship on Monday night.

Sky Sports claimed that the Hammers were interested in signing Malcuit in January, but failed with a £10million move as Les Verts did not want to lose him in the middle of the season.

Wearing the number 25 shirt for Christophe Galtier’s side, Malcuit has starred for the Ligue 1 outfit this season as they sit in a lofty seventh place in France’s top tier.

Providing four assists, the French speed machine has also proved instrumental in helping his side keep 10 clean sheets during his 31 league and cup appearances.

Malcuit joined St. Etienne just two years ago from Ligue 2 side Niort, and is known for his aggression which has seen him sent off twice this season.

Able to play at left-back as well as right midfield, Malcuit has a contract until the summer of 2019 but could now leave with both Premier League sides keen to sign him ahead of the 2017-18 season.

Football Insider verdict:

Both Newcastle and West Ham are in need of a right-back. The Hammers have used the likes of Michail Antonio, Havard Nordtveit and Cheickhou Kouyate on the right side of defence this season, as Sam Byram and Alvaro Arbeloa struggle with injuries. Byram’s return has not solved the problem, though, as his performances are still a cause for concern. Similarly on Tyneside, DeAndre Yedlin is currently sidelined with an injury that could see him miss the start of the 2017-18 season, while Vurnon Anita’s contract is set to expire in just over two months’ time. Bringing in Malcuit, who is considered one of the best up-and-coming defenders of Ligue 1, will prove to be an important signing for either West Ham or Newcastle.
