Noel Whelan has fired Steve Bruce a warning as Newcastle United reportedly weigh up an offer for Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer.
The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the defender may jump ship if things don’t go right for him at Newcastle.
Ajer, 23, recently spoke to Norwegian outlet VG about his future and revealed “something will happen this summer”.
On 22nd May, the Daily Mail claimed United are considering an £8million move for the defender ahead of the transfer window opening.
Ajer has just 12 months remaining on his Celtic contract and it is likely the club will cash in this summer if he does not agree to sign a new deal.
The defender barely missed a game during Celtic’s disastrous 2020/21 season.
However, Whelan claims Ajer can be a good signing for Newcastle but instead Bruce should have concerns.
“He will probably end up being a very good signing for Newcastle,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“The difficult one is why could he not be that for Celtic?
“As a manager, you look at that and you’re questioning his character straight away.
“Is he going to fight or sink? Is he going to jump ship? He’s done it once.
“What’s to say if things don’t go right at Newcastle he won’t do the same thing?”
Ajer has played 174 games for the Hoops since arriving in Glasgow from Norweigan club IK Start in 2016.
He scored two goals during his 46 outings in the recently concluded 2020/21 campaign.
