Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United do not need to take Illan Meslier out of the firing line and sign a proven goalkeeper.
The former Whites attacker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Meslier’s errors have been far less damaging of late than Alisson’s at Liverpool.
Meslier had a poor first half against Arsenal at the weekend as three individual errors saw Marcelo Bielsa’s side go 3-0 down before half time.
Similarly, Alisson has made high profile mistakes in Liverpool’s last two Premier League games as the Reds lost to Manchester City and Leicester.
Whelan doesn’t think that his former side should panic over Meslier and insisted that the young keeper will learn from his mistakes.
When asked if Leeds need to sign a new goalkeeper, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “I don’t think Leeds need to start panicking with the goalkeeper.
“He’s (Meslier) done very very well this season and let’s not forget he’s very young. Everything that happens, he’ll learn from.
“Look at Alisson. He’s a Brazilian international and look at the mistakes he’s been making. His mistakes were worse that Meslier’s.
“You’ve got to take the rough with the smooth and understand that he’s still learning, these mistakes can be made by anybody.
“It’s not something I’m too worried about. It’s just one of those 45-minute performances that players have in their career.
“It wasn’t like Meslier was the only one who had a bad afternoon, no-one was firing on all cylinders against Arsenal.”
Meslier has been a regular starter in the Premier League this season with the Frenchman only missing one league match with an illness.
Leeds are next in action on Friday night as they welcome Wolves to Elland Road while looking to get back to winning ways.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been tipped to make a move for a former player this summer.
