Why Newcastle should plot move for reportedly available international defender
COMMENT By Derek Smithson
Newcastle should consider making a move for Hoffenheim defender Fabian Schar in the summer.
German outlet Bild report that the Bundesliga club are prepared to sell the 25-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.
It is understood that Hoffenheim want £4.3million for the centre-back’s signature and that he is still under contract with the German club until 2019.
Schar fell down the pecking order last season for his club, but has proven in the past that he has a lot of qualities that could make him a fan favourite at St James’ Park.
The defender has 28 international caps for Switzerland and was an ever-present in his nation’s European Championship campaign in 2016.

He is also well recognised domestically for his spell with Swiss giants FC Basel and racked up 115 appearances for them, chipping in with 15 goals from defence.
Schar was unable to cement his position in the starting line-up last season and was unlucky with injuries, but Newcastle should put it down to a bad season.
He is comfortable in possession, a strong tackler, and someone that could definitely bolster the Newcastle backline.
Rafael Benitez should look to bring in some extra defensive options and £4.3million could turn out to be a huge bargain for the international.
Schar would be able to provide real competition to Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba and Ciaran Clark for a starting role.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they have been offered the chance to sign a proven Premier League striker.
