Alex McLeish has claimed Ryan Sessegnon will be “in talks with his agent” over a move as Tottenham close in on the signing of Sergio Reguilon.
The experienced manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggests that the youngster could be “frozen out” of Jose Mourinho’s squad if he stays in north London past the end of the transfer window.
As revealed by Football Insider, Jose Mourinho has given the green light for the 20-year-old to leave the club on loan before October’s deadline after Spurs agreed a £28million deal to sign left-back Reguilon from Real Madrid.
Sessegnon had been tipped to battle with Ben Davies for the left-back spot in north London but the prospective signing of the Spain international is likely to limit his opportunities.
The young left-footer has played just 12 times for Spurs since his £25million move from Fulham last summer.
McLeish believes that the England under-21 international will be seriously considering his future at the club and believes a loan could be on the cards.
Asked where Ruguilon’s arrival would leave Sessegnon, ex-Aston Villa, Rangers and Scotland boss McLeish told Football Insider: “I know, that’s a very interesting one. Perhaps it wasn’t the right move.
“Ryan, he’ll be in talks, I’m sure, with his agent already, whether there could be a possible loan or something. It looks as though he’s going to be frozen out.
“Yes, whatever you might say about young, precocious, brilliant talent like Ryan, sometimes it’s the guys who know a little bit about the game and know a wee bit more, with their experience, because you’ve got to allow young players to make mistakes.
“Ryan’s probably in a stage just now where he’s thinking: ‘What am I doing wrong? I’m doing what I did at Fulham to get me the move and now I have to try and show them all again.’
“Whether Jose’s got another plan, I don’t know.”
