Frank Lampard delivers verdict on Gerrard at Rangers
Frank Lampard has said that Steven Gerrard has worked hard for his shot at Rangers, as the former Liverpool legend officially took charge at Ibrox today.
Lampard, a Chelsea legend from the same playing days, was announced as Derby manager yesterday, ushering win with Gerrard a new wave of coaches.
And Lampard thinks that Gerrard will do a good job up in Scotland.
Talking in the Evening Times, Lampard said: “I like the fact that Steven, I wouldn’t say went out of his comfort zone, but he was obviously learning his trade at Liverpool with the Under-18s and I think that’s great.
“Steven Gerrard’s a competitive man, I know that, and nothing beats competitive men’s football. That’s what he’s in now and I love that he took on that challenge.
“I love the fact that a young manager got the chance to take on that challenge and I hope he’s successful. He deserves that, he was a successful player and I don’t see any reason why he won’t be.”
The first official appointment of Gerrard’s reign was made today when Jordan Milson confirmed he was joining the backroom team, with two more Liverpool men set to follow.
Football Insider verdict:
There has been lots of talk since the two young managers have taken equally demanding jobs. Neither have experience at this level but you have to start somewhere. Lampard will ply his trade in the ultra-competitive Championship, where it will be a huge challenge to get Derby promoted. The Scottish Premiership might be seen as a one-horse race, but Gerrard will have his own challenges in a highly pressurised environment at Ibrox. He has the fans fully behind him at the moment but that could change if results start going against him. The Rangers board may have slightly less ambitious targets but it’s fair to say that for the fans, only the Premiership title will do. And, with Celtic such massive favourites, and with so much more money to spend, that might not be actually possible. One thing is for sure – runners-up is the very least that will do for anyone connected with the club, whereas Lampard will be aiming for the top six. Both have hugely difficult first senior posts though and we wish them both the best.
