Gerrard poised to steal talented PL attacker for free after major contract blunder exposed
Steven Gerrard could be the big beneficiary of a stupid contract blunder by Newcastle.
According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have lost winger Alex Gilliead for free after missing the cut-off point to agree a new contract with him last year.
Gilliead has now become a free agent with Gerrard set to swoop to take him to Rangers in a stunning move that will leave Newcastle fans seething.
The 22-year-old winger, who can also play as a striker, was not offered a new deal and now it is claimed Newcastle are not even due a penny of compensation.
With money tight at St James’ Park, that’s a massive oversight that could be to the huge benefit of Rangers.
Gilliead made the senior team bench but never made it onto the pitch, but he has impressed across three loan periods at Luton, Bradford, Carlisle.

Gerrard has his eye on the young attacker and with no fee to pay, could land a significant bargain, with a player who still has aspirations of making it in the Premier League.
He says that he’s happy to drop down a league to resurrect his career but Gerrard could offer him a massive stage in Scotland to prove that Newcastle have just made a really costly mistake.
Talking after his contract expired, Gilliead said: “It will be a new chapter in my career.
“I have been at Newcastle for six or seven years now, so it’s quite a long time. It hasn’t worked out the way I wanted it to.
“But these things happen and you just have to try to find your best option after that.
“If I do have to drop down a league, then the aim is still to get back to the Premier League wherever that may be.”
