Steven Gerrard is closing in on the first Rangers signing from Liverpool this summer, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claim that 20-year-old midfielder Ovie Ejaria, who can also play in a more advanced role, is being allowed to leave on loan again this summer after spending the second half of last season at Sunderland.
He is said to be far enough down the pecking order that Jurgen Klopp is happy to complete the deal early.
Gerrard is expecting to wrap up the deal next week.
Football Insider verdict:
This wasn’t the name that Rangers fans were expecting to hear they were going to land from Liverpool. Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn, Ryan Kent and Dominic Solanke have all been linked, but now it looks like it might be Ejaria who is the first to move north of the border from Anfield. Ejaria played 11 games in the Championship for Sunderland and scored one goal last season, and he’s actually made eight senior appearances for the senior Liverpool side – including two in the Premier League – but he hasn’t kept his momentum going. His last senior appearance for Liverpool was back in early 2017. We’re not saying that Ejaria won’t be able to do a job for Rangers, but fans won’t have anywhere near as much excitement about him joining as the other youngsters. Sunderland were relegated from the Championship last season and the general consensus was that Ejaria didn’t offer much to the side. He was supposed to be in the Young Lions squad out in France this week but had to pull out injured.
