The race to sign Abel Hernandez from Hull is heating up.
Hull want to keep the player who is out of contract in the summer, but that looks very unlikely, with lots of clubs keen to add the player who scored eight goals in his last nine games in the Championship to their ranks.
Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato previously reported that Celtic had made a “monster” offer for Hernandez, which would make him the best-paid player in Scotland.
It won’t be easy to lure him to Celtic, but Peter Lawwell has one ace up his sleeve and must use it fast.
Because of Celtic’s ‘overseas’ status, they can make an official approach to Hernandez before any English clubs.
They will have to wait until his contract runs out on June 30.
Hull want to keep him and won’t entertain any overtures, which means that Celtic have a massive chance to convince him that his future lies at Parkhead.
There’s no better way to do this than bring out the big guns.
Peter Lawwell and Brendan Rodgers between them can turn Hernandez’s head with the lure of a big-money offer and Champions League football.
But they’ll need to be quick. In just over a month’s time it’s going to be a free-for-all and the advantage will pass back to the Premier League clubs.
