Leeds United

Alan Hutton claims Leeds United can be a strong Premier League side if they bring in a new left-back this summer.

The former Aston Villa defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Leeds must sign a better left back than Ezgjan Alioski.

Alioski, 29, is set to leave Leeds at the end of the season after rejecting the club’s offers of a new contract.

He has served as a stand-in left back this season despite playing as an attacker for the majority of his Leeds career.

Hutton claims Leeds lacked a figurehead in the defence at the start of the season and insists they are one player away from a strong defence.

“You need that figurehead,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“That was a problem at the start of the season. Yes, they were scoring lots of goals but they were conceding too.

“The defence wasn’t right but Marcelo Bielsa is now starting to put the right people in the right places.

“That’s not because he wrong, it was because he didn’t have them at that time because of injuries.

“Defensively, they need to get that sorted in the summer. They need a new full back even though Alioski has done excellently well.

“If they can get that sorted, they’ll have a really strong team next season.”

Alioski has featured heavily for Leeds this season, making 32 appearances in the Premier League so far.

He came in for some criticism on Saturday afternoon as he gave away a penalty in the 2-0 loss to Brighton.

In other news, Noel Whelan has been left in awe of a “phenomenal” 21-year-old Marcelo Bielsa was “wrong” about at Leeds United.
