Newcastle must let PL rivals waste money on record equalling fee for reported attacking target

COMMENT

When it comes to smashing transfer records in the Premier League, Newcastle United are firmly at the back of the queue.

The Magpies have not seen their record spend broken in over 10 years, with their £16million capture of Michael Owen from Real Madrid the biggest fee the club have ever spent.

Over the 12-and-a-half-years since, every of the other 19 current Premier League sides have topped their record capture, and with Mike Ashley at the helm, it looks unlikely that there will be any big money arrivals at St James’ Park any time soon.

However, while it might be frustrating for the Toon Army to see their rivals making the most of their money, it could well turn into a blessing in disguise, with clubs charging premium prices for average players.

It looks to be the same case this summer, especially in the case of Galatasaray winger Garry Rodrigues.

The Magpies have been linked with the 27-year-old numerous times, most recently by Turkish publication Aksam, who said that both Newcastle and Everton were sending scouts to watch the Cape Verde international, having both been in talks over a move for the forward.

Now it has been reported by Takvim that the duo’s Premier League rivals West Ham have tabled a bid in the region of £10.5million for Rodrigues, in what looks to be a serious battle for the international’s capture.

However, the report also states that Galatasaray are demanding a fee of £16million to let the 23-cap star leave the club, and with a record equalling fee on the table, the Magpies must walk away.

While he might have impressed this season, there is a notable difference in the quality of Turkey’s top flight to the Premier League, and as an unproven 27-year-old, there is no way he should be commanding such a fee.

A figure of around £10million – £12million would be fair, but anything above that would just be wasted money, and if a bidding war is set to commence, then it is best for Newcastle to let their rivals battle it out as they search for another target.
