Pundit can't believe the 'weird' January deals lined up by Newcastle after source's update

Frank McAvennie insists the new transfer strategy at Newcastle “doesn’t scream confidence” ahead of the January window.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, did stress the Magpies can still make positive signings in January.

This site revealed on 11 November that Eddie Howe’s priority in January is to recruit two centre-backs and a central midfielder proven at the highest level.

A Newcastle source has since told Football Insider (23 November) that the club will only make loan signings in the mid-season window.

McAvennie claims Newcastle can still sign experienced players on loan but noted the reveal doesn’t “scream confidence”.

“It doesn’t scream confidence,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But Newcastle will have to take what they can get in January. It seems a bit weird for a club with so much money.

“Money talks but unless they improve drastically in the next few weeks, they will be bottom of the league.

“Everyone knows the money Newcastle have but I think players would rather sit on the bench elsewhere than get relegated.

“Of course, a loan gets rid of that risk. So they could still sign experienced Premier League players who are maybe out of favour at other clubs.

“That could work for them. But if they want to compete with other clubs in the top 10 of the table, no way.”

Newcastle have conceded 27 goals this season, the most goals in the Premier League.

The Magpies sit bottom of the league after 12 games.
