Shearer delivers verdict on Newcastle window, shares what is needed in final fortnight

By Aramide Oladipo

Alan Shearer believes that Newcastle United still need to add “another two or three players” before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Tyneside club have managed to bring in six new players to the squad with striker Joselu completing his deal on Wednesday morning for a reported fee of £5million.

Summer signings Javier Manquillo, Florian Lejeune and Christian Atsu all featured from the start on the opening weekend of the new campaign as Newcastle suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham at St James’ Park.

It turned out to be a nightmare debut for Lejeune as he was forced off just after the half an hour mark with an injury.

New arrival Mikel Merino enjoyed a late cameo whilst new winger Jacob Murphy was an unused substitute on Sunday afternoon.

Writing in his blog on the official Coral website, former Toon Shearer feels that the Joselu signing is encouraging but he still believes that the club still need to invest in the squad.

“At my club Newcastle, I know Rafa Benitez has been frustrated by the lack of transfer activity over the summer, they have signed Joselu from Stoke this week, which is a step forward, but he still needs another two or three players in,” he wrote

“Watching them against Spurs last weekend, it was clear that although they might try and make themselves hard to beat, they do need some more quality in the side, and the squad that won the Championship was always going to need strengthening for the Premier League.”

Newcastle boss Benitez appears willing to add more bodies this summer as the Telegraph revealed that he is looking to make five more signings.

The Magpies have signed less players than fellow newly-promoted sides Brighton and Huddersfield Town in the transfer market.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are firmly in the running to sign another Liverpool attacking gem.
