Report: Rangers set to sign former Premier League duo, deals imminent

By Alex Stevens

Rangers are close to signing former Premier League duo Clint Hill and Niko Kranjcar, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claims Hill is set to become the club’s latest shock signing by penning a one-year deal.

It is said manager Mark Warburton wants veteran defender Hill, who turns 38 in October, to add experience to his back line for next season’s top-flight return.

Kranjcar, 31, is also heading to Ibrox after accepting Rangers’ offer of a two-year contract following the expiry of his deal with the New York Cosmos.

Warburton has made the double swoop for the veteran pair as he aims to bring some Premier League knowhow to a squad competing in the top tier of Scottish football for the first time in four years.

Another former Premier League star Joey Barton, who joined Rangers last month, has recommended his former team mate Hill to the manager.

Barton played alongside Hill at QPR and has urged Rangers boss Warburton to sign the 37-year-old after he left Loftus Road when his contract expired this month.

In a career spanning 19 years, Hill has made almost 600 competitive appearances, including 72 games in the Premier League, and worked with the likes of Tony Pulis and Harry Redknapp.

Hill left QPR after six years at the club and Warburton is hopeful the centre-back can have the same kind of impact that former Gers defender David Weir did in 2007.

Weir arrived at the Ibrox just a few months shy of his 37th birthday, but stayed five years at the club, winning eight major trophies, including three league titles.

Hill is now a free agent after managing just 15 appearances for QPR this season and spending the majority of the campaign struggling to make it onto the bench.

In other Rangers news, Celitc will go head to head with the Light Blues for the signature of Brendan Rodgers’ former player.
