Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is believed to be targeting “at least” three centre-backs this summer, according to a report, and it could give a massive hint over the future of Gers star Ross McCrorie.
According to the Daily Record, Gerrard wants to bring Brighton’s Connor Goldson and a further two new central defenders to Ibrox – likely spelling the end of Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso at the club – meaning McCrorie could find himself playing regularly in midfield under the Liverpool icon.
The 20-year-old can fill a number of positions including central defender, right-back and defensive midfielder but with three new defenders wanted then it’s difficult to see where the Scotland Under-21 international would fit in.
Although the midfield is arguably just as packed, McCrorie, Jordan Rossiter and Ryan Jack would likely be competing with each other for, at least, one spot in front of the Gers’ defence.
There’s a real split of opinion over where McCrorie’s long-term future lies but the chance to master the position Gerrard looked so comfortable in for Liverpool is something that could really help the homegrown youngster take the step up to the next level as he continues his development.
Future transfer developments could yet mean McCrorie is far from guaranteed a first-team place but with the centre of defence a real weakness for the Gers, a move to midfield looks most likely for the Gers ace as Gerrard looks to get his reign off to as successful a start as possible.
