Newcastle blow as PL champions enter race for 24-year-old star – reports

By Aramide Oladipo

Leicester City have joined Newcastle United and Tottenham in the race to sign Hull City defender Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window, according to a report.

The Daily Mirror claims that the Foxes will make a bid for Maguire this summer.

It said that the 2015/16 Premier League champions are interested in bringing much younger defenders into the club.

Robert Huth will soon turn 33 and The Sun on Sunday claims that Wes Morgan is also being targeted by Newcastle.

The Sun claimed that both Newcastle and Tottenham are also interested in Maguire, after an earlier report from The Sun that said the 24-year-old defender was Newcastle’s top summer target.

Maguire featured in the 4-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park that confirmed Hull City’s relegation to the Championship next season.

The defender has made a total of 32 Premier League appearances during his time with the Tigers.

Football Insider verdict

When assessing his options this summer, Harry Maguire needs to decide which club will allow him to see the most time on the football pitch. Given Tottenham’s outstanding defensive performances in the last two seasons, he’s likely to just be used as a back-up and might only feature in the cup matches. Leicester is also an enticing option but a lot depends on whether Wes Morgan will be staying at the club. Newcastle are a newly promoted side, but working with Rafa Benitez will only improve Maguire’s game as the Spanish manager has worked with the very best over his managerial career. The Magpies are definitely a side who need players with Premier League experience and Harry Maguire certainly fits the bill.
