Danny Drinkwater could be on the cusp of a sensational move to Premier League champions Chelsea, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that the 27-year-old midfielder is set to inform Leicester that he wants to move, amid reports that Antonio Conte is “seriously interested” in bringing the former PL winner to Stamford Bridge.
If the deal goes through it would represent a real change in fortunes for the former Man United academy player.
Drinkwater came through the youth system at Old Trafford but after several loan moves to clubs like Huddersfield, Cardiff, Watford and Barnsley, he was sold to Leicester for £750k in January 2012.
He has since become a mainstay at the midlands club, making 218 appearances, scoring 15 goals and adding 23 assists.
Drinkwater was a regular in the title winning team of 2015/16, making 35 appearances in the league, adding three goals and eight assists.
Now it looks like he could be on his way to help defend another Premier League title.
The Mirror report that Chelsea were keen on Drinkwater last season, in addition to N’golo Kante in a double move.
However, Leicester were not happy with losing two key players and Chelsea’s priority was Kante.
Now they’re back and both Chelsea and Drinkwater are keen to push the move through.
Drinkwater missed Leicester’s game with Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday, fuelling speculation that the move is imminent.
Football Insider verdict:
This might not be the world-shattering deal that Chelsea supporters are used to reading about but Drinkwater could be a fine addition to the squad, adding depth as Chelsea get used to fighting in the Champions League as well as the Premier League this season. Drinkwater might not have a world-class reputation but he made three England appearances last year and he’s an intelligent and hard-working player. He’s under contract until 2021 and Leicester won’t want to lose him on the cheap, so his fee could come as a surprise, but we think the move makes sense and it also looks very likely to progress.
In other Chelsea news, a four-year deal was signed as this defender left the club.
