Martin Dubravka made a huge impact on his Newcastle debut, making a number of saves to ensure that his side won a huge three points against Man United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The goalkeeper is on loan from Sparta Prague, arriving on deadline day and already looking a lock to be Rafa Benitez’s number one.
The Daily Mail has reported that there is a £4m clause that would enable Newcastle to make his move permanent in the summer – and that’s already looking a bargain.
That’s certainly the opinion of Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer, who was talking about Dubravka on MotD 2 on Sunday (BBC2, 10.30pm).
He said that it was a “brilliant” home debut and made a massive claim when he said the player had already paid back the £4million it would cost to make his move permanent.
“Well he’s got him on loan until the end of the season and I’m told there’s clause in there if they choose the option to buy him for £4million,” Shearer said.
“What a debut at St James’ Park, in a game of this size.
“He gave confidence to his back four, one-on-ones didn’t phase him, he was sharp off his and everything they chucked at him he handled with ease.
“What a brilliant home debut. If it is £4m he’s paid that back already with that performance.”
The win against Man United catapulted Newcastle into 13th after hovering just above the relegation zone on goal difference before kick off.
It’s a three points that Newcastle fans would not have been expecting and they’ll be hoping that Dubravka can keep this level of performance up for the rest of the season.
