Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has agreed to join Charlton Athletic on loan ahead of Friday’s transfer cut-off, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 18-year-old Dutchman has been given permission to head out of Stamford Bridge and has already begun training with his new team.

A Chelsea source has told Football Insider that the club have agreed a loan deal with Charlton for Maatsen.

The deal is being finalised today, as the teenager puts pen to paper, and an announcement is expected soon.

The Premier League giants are keen for the versatile defender to gain key experience and regular game time at a senior level.

This comes after they allowed fellow rising star, goalkeeper Nathan Baxter , to join Accrington Stanley on loan last week.

That deal was also first revealed by Football Insider.

Unlike Baxter, Maatsen has made his senior bow for Chelsea, which came in September 2019 in a a 7-1 EFL Cup thrashing of Grimsby Town.

The youngster is so highly rated he has represented Holland from Under-15 level through to the Under-18s.

The versatile defender is primarily a left-back but can also play as a centre-half if required.

He has been playing at left-back for Chelsea Under-23s in Premier League 2 this season, starting all four matches in that position.

Maatsen’s arrival at Charlton is a major blow to his other suitors, with Championship outfit Reading hopeful of sealing a loan deal last month.
