Sources: Longstaff wants to quit Newcastle after fury over Hendrick
Matty Longstaff was furious after not being brought on as Newcastle United beat Fulham last weekend, Football Insider understands.
Longstaff, 21, only made five Premier League appearances last season despite his exciting 2019-20 breakthrough.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider Longstaff was left angry and upset after Jeff Hendrick was chosen to come on against Fulham ahead of him.
On Thursday, this site revealed Longstaff will ask to leave Newcastle this summer after continuous broken promises from Steve Bruce.
He has one year remaining on the two year deal he signed last summer.
The main issue for Longstaff was his lack of game time as Bruce promised he would be given a chance towards the end of the season.
Longstaff featured on the bench during the last weeks of the campaign but he never came on.
The issue came to a head when Bruce elected to make a substitution against Fulham as just 10 minutes of the season remained.
Instead of giving Longstaff a run out with the game essentially over, Bruce brought on Hendrick.
The former Burnley man joined Newcastle on a free last summer and is an unpopular figure among the Toon Army.
Despite scoring two goals, Hendrick’s performances have left a lot to be desired.
However, Bruce continued to use Hendrick as a substitute after Joe Willock’s installation in the starting 11.
Longstaff was not granted the same chance to earn a place in the team and has been left furious by Bruce’s actions.
As a result, Longstaff is looking to move on this summer.
Longstaff made 16 first team appearances in all competitions during his breakthrough season.
He is one of the few academy graduates to make a first team appearance in recent years.
In other news, Bruce is plotting a “bargain” signing from Leeds with his meagre Newcastle United kitty.
