Rangers new boy Connor Goldson is being lined up to become the club’s new captain, Football Insider sources understands.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that summer signing Goldson is expected to be named captain with Gerrard a big admirer of the central defender.
New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted the captaincy is up for grabs at Ibrox this summer as he plans ahead for next season.
Lee Wallace has been capatin for the last three years, but his future at the club remains in doubt following his suspension by the club after a bust-up in the wake of the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic.
James Tavernier stepped in as captain last season when Wallace was missing, but Gerrard is considering contenders to take the armband for next season.
Former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard played a key role in persuading Goldson to leave Brighton for Rangers and is understood to have informed him he sees him as a leader in his new-look Rangers team.
Goldson is expected to be a regular starter in a reshaped Rangers defence next season and Gerrard is now ready to give him the extra responsibility of being club captain.
