Newcastle are set to keep hold of Dwight Gayle after knocking back approaches from a number of clubs, including West Brom and Stoke, Football Insider understands.

Gayle’s future at Newcastle has been the subject of speculation all summer after he spent last season on loan at West Brom.

West Brom were keen on bringing Gayle back to the Hawthorns either on loan or in a permanent deal after he impressed at the club last season.

Gayle scored 24 goals for West Brom last season, helping them reach the play-off semi-finals.

Stoke had also made enquiries for Gayle as they look for a goalscorer to boost their bid for promotion back to the Premier League next season.

However, a source close to Newcastle has told Football Insider that the club has rejected the approaches as new Magpies boss Steve Bruce wants to keep the striker at St James’ Park.

Newcastle feel they are short of cover in attacking options after losing the likes of Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez, and Joselu this summer and Bruce feels they cannot afford to let Gayle leave as well.
