Newcastle’s Jack Colback is attracting shock interest from Premier League and Championship sides, according to a report.
The Chronicle report that the 27-year-old could be axed by Rafa Benitez this summer, with clubs from both divisions eyeing a move for the flame-haired midfielder.
Th news comes as a shock after Colback has endured a difficult season in the middle of the park for Newcastle, coming under constant criticism from Newcastle fans for his performances.
Fans even took to Twitter last month in order to urge their club to sell the former Sunderland midfielder, with many highlighting his inability to pass forward even when in search of a goal.
The versatile left-footer has dropped in and out of the side during the second half of the season, with Benitez opting to play Mohamed Diame alongside Jonjo Shelvey instead.
This season, Newcastle’s number four made 34 league and cup appearances for the Toon, but has provided just two assists in the shadow of England international Shelvey.
Now, with a contract at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2019, Benitez could axe Colback in order to make room for new signings as he looks to conduct a summer overhaul of his squad.
Football Insider verdict:
Colback has been dismal this season for the north-east outfit and if the Toon can bring in a fee of around £3million to £5million for the one-time England Under-20 international, then they should cash in on him without hesitation. The midfielder has been one of a number of Newcastle stars to have been found out following his side’s relegation to the second tier of English football, with Paul Dummett and Yoann Gouffran also struggling. Making room in the middle of the park, as well as receiving a transfer fee for Colback, will give Benitez some manoeuvrability as he looks to bolster all areas of his squad. The report doesn’t name the Premier league clubs interested, but it’s hard to see a club that would benefit from a player who couldn’t cut it in the Championship.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the Toon have suffered a blow as these Premier League champions have entered the race to sign this 24-year-old.
