Noel Whelan has warned “something isn’t right” with Celtic star Olivier Ntcham as Newcastle United reignite their interest.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds hitman reacted to the latest on the Celtic midfielder’s future.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Ntcham is back on Newcastle’s radar after they lost out to Marseille in the race to sign him in January.

This site revealed on 22nd May that Celtic have decided to terminate the contract of the Frenchman a year early.

Ntcham, 25, only made four league appearances for Marseille after joining them on loan in January.

Whelan claims something isn’t right with Ntcham’s situation but admitted he could be a value for money signing by Mike Ashley.

“There’s something not right there,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“When people are terminating contracts you have to question why.

“Newcastle right now, looking at the grand scheme of things, he’s [Ashley] not going to splash the cash.

“He will try and sign players who are competitive but represent value for money. This could be one of those.

“That seems to be where they are going right now. They have a great front line if you can keep them fit.

“They could possibly do with a bit more experience in that midfield. But, I’d like to see them look to the future.

“To bring someone in who is a little bit younger, someone with energy. A different type of player in that midfield. Someone like Ntcham.”

Ntcham joined Celtic from Manchester City in 2017.

He made 147 appearances for the Hoops during his four-year stint at the club.
